Glasses for your conservatory

The choice of glazing determines the use of the conservatory – from the greenhouse to the living space.

consists of float glass; it is not used for heated conservatories due to its lack of thermal insulation function and the associated formation of condensate. It is used in greenhouses and as a laminated safety glass combination also for roofing.

usually consists of two 4 mm thick float glass panes which are airtightly bonded by means of an interspace-forming spacer frame. A drying agent in the cavity of the spacer frame binds the moisture of the air contained in the space between the panes.

Due to inadequate thermal insulation, these glasses are no longer used today.

The structure of the glass panes corresponds to that of the insulating glass. Common spaces between the panes are 12 – 16 mm. The significantly higher thermal insulation compared to insulating glass is achieved by an almost invisible heat radiation reflecting layer of metal oxides and a gas filling in the space between the panes. In overhead glazing, the room-side pane is designed as laminated safety glass.

At present the still common glazing for conservatories, windows, doors, etc.

The structure of the panes corresponds to that of the thermal insulation glass. However, 3 panes are connected to each other via 2 spacer frames and 2 spaces between panes (SZR) to form a pane unit. The extreme thermal insulation is achieved by two heat-reflecting functional layers and inert gas fillings in the spaces between the panes. In the sense of the current energy saving regulation (EN 673) this glazing is indispensable for dwellings.

For example, at – 10° outside temperature and 21° inside temperature, the pane in the interior is still +19° warm. Cold radiation is no longer noticeable and the desired comfort is ensured even at low outside temperatures.

The pane structure corresponds to that of the thermal insulation glass. Two 4 mm thick float glass panes, one of which has a heat-reflecting layer, are connected to each other in an airtight manner using spacers 1 mm thick. A vacuum is created in this weld gap. The air pressure acting from the outside is absorbed by numerous barely visible metal needles.

Currently, these glasses are available with U-values of 0.3 – 0.5 W/m2K. There are still considerable restrictions on the pane dimensions and glass combinations.

functional glasses

Sun protection glass

On the one hand the unbearable heating of your conservatory in summer must be prevented, on the other hand as much light as possible should illuminate the rooms. You can achieve this with a solar control glass. Short-wave heat radiation is highly reflected by the solar control glass, while daylight can pass largely unhindered. (see also g-value)

Safety glass

Beautiful houses are increasingly visited by uninvited guests who prefer to enter through the window. Security glass offers effective protection against burglary.

Dimmable glasses

If the transparency of the glass is not permanently desired, the use of electrochromic glass is recommended. Here, a nanostructured coating turns blue when an electrical voltage is applied, thus reducing the permeability of sunlight. This not only preserves privacy, but also makes sun protection possible.

Soundproof glass

90% of all Germans now feel annoyed by noise and long for peace and quiet. Depending on the location, use and source of noise, different requirements are placed on the glazing. Sound insulation values of up to 52 dB (decibels) can be achieved.

Glasses with self-cleaning effect

This glass cleans itself continuously and actively – with the help of daylight and rain. And it does so so well that the glass needs to be cleaned much less frequently. A unique decision that saves time, money and nerves throughout a window’s life. Details about the Activ glass…

Ug-value / g-value

Ug-value

The lower the Ug-value, the better the thermal insulation.

The heat transfer coefficient – Ug-value (often referred to as k-value) is the central physical parameter in determining the heat loss through a building component. The heat transfer coefficient indicates the amount of heat that passes through 1 m² of a building component per hour at a temperature difference of 1 K between the adjoining room air and the outside air.

g-value

The higher the g-value, the greater the solar energy gain.

The g-value is the total energy transmittance of glazing for solar radiation in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 2,500 nm. It is expressed in % and indicates how much of the solar energy passes through the glass.

Activ Glass - Self-cleaning

Pilkington Activ™ cleans itself continuously actively – with the help of daylight and rain. Without the use of cleaners and aids. And that so well that the glass must be cleaned substantially more rarely. And if, often simple Abspritzen with water without leather suffices. A unique decision that saves time, money and nerves throughout a window’s life. Pilkington Activ™ is the glass of the future, which inspires already now thousands world-wide.

Your advantages

And that's how it works:

  1. 1st Step: Organic dirt is removed by the UV radiation of the sunlight and with the help of the special coating on the glass surface.
  2. 2nd step: Rain rinses off the dissolved dirt completely – spotless.
  3. 3rd step: Clean!
